I have been a travel agent for 3 years and before I became an agent, I ALWAYS booked my leisure travel through an agent. I cross my eyes sometimes with some of the outragous questions I see on here. If people just picked up the phone and spoke to someone that knows the industry and what they were talking about they would be much better off. I’m not talking about transportation. Meaning if you are going from LA to NYC and staying with your aunt, purchasae your ticket online. But if you need a package or leisure vacation you’re robbing yourself of value. I don’t know of an agent that adds service fees unless it’s only airline tickets. Airlines don’t pay commission to agents so they must add on a service fee. But for packages we’re compensated once the client travels. We’re also educated by product seminars and have relationships with vendors that can add value. I just don’t understand why people rob themselves of service. The internet is a great resourse tool and so is a travel agent

I will (hopefully) be sailing the skies, by next year. I will (pending my acceptance to the Art Institute) be living in San Francisco. So what airline would you recommend? or ic i could get some other travel agencies besides orbitz and travelocity. I appreciate most comments

If you go to a travel agent who is very rude to you and doesn’t want to help you at all.Infact laughs at you for a senario like beloe:
You went to a travel agent, service was good. Agent helped you giving the best fare. Next day you go again after deciding to go for the fare you were given. The same agent was not available and the different agent laughs at you for the fare that you are telling him which you were given by previous agent. This agent basically tries to prove that you are lying. You ask him to check for the fare and he is looking at wrong dates and airline and giving you the most expensive fare. He wasted 1hr30mins of yours.

I need to get out working and fast, but I need a skill. I’ve always wanted to work in the travel industry or for an airline. I can take a course at a fairly well known travel academy (with a good job placement record) or I have to wait to enroll next fall at a tech school for a 1-2 year aas degree in tourism. How much difference would there be in career opportunities? I would like to work for an airline , travel agency or internet booking agency. Thanks
