The History Of Cape Town
An interesting piece of information about the “Cape of Good Hope” – It was called “The Cape of Storms” earlier by Bartolomeus Dias, who arrived here in 1488. Ten years later, the famous Portugal traveler Vasco de Gama arrived here, the Portuguese monopolized their trade with the countries in the East and the Europeans got used with the khoi-khoi. This could be one of the basic reasons for the cultural diversity of Cape Town. From 1652, Cape Town served as the transit spot for the ships to refill their food and water reserves, once Jan Van Riebeek had setup a permanent settlement, which facilitated the Eastern trade to a great extent. The increasing need for food for the passing ships led to the cultivation of crops in the area and thus the employment of Slaves for doing cultivation jobs. These slaves migrated from various cultures and also played a major role in the Cape’s diversity of cultural heritage.

Tourism
Cape Town offers a good variety of ethnic music, coupled with tribal African dancers, which can be experienced at the St George’s Mall. There one will find good traditional African music performed on instruments such as bongo drums, xylophones and flutes. On the first of January the streets of Cape Town are filled with the reach cultural activity of the “Kaapse Klopse” or Coon Carnival. It is an annual parade of about 20 000 dancing and singing people, performing traditional tunes to start the New Year on a positive note. A Wisconsin Vacation Must Include a Excursion to the Wind Point Lighthouse in Wisconsin

Just on the edge of Racine, Wisconsin is the little town of Wind Point.  It is right on the edge of Lake Michigan.  Michigan tourist should include a vacation to this little hamlet and the fabulous Wind Point Lighthouse.  The beauty of the grounds and the heritage that surrounds it make for an exciting stop on your trip.

Visiting the Racine region will give you many opportunities to experience some |beautiful views.  You may be able to explore the heritage of the region as well as tour a variety of quality museums, but the one that will probably stick in your mind for a long time is the vacation to the edges of Lake Michigan and the vistas you will see from the Wind Point Lighthouse.  Take along a snack lunch to |eat on the grounds.  Observe the waves break as they roll in from this wonderous lake and think about all the boaters that have traveled these waters during the years to haul goods to the region or to haul up goods for commerce at remote ports.  Enjoy the time to appreciate the opportunity to feel the power, learn of the history and appreciate the architecture from the past that built this structure in the days before modern cranes and computer generated drawings.  It is quite a site.

One of Wisconsin attractions, the light house building is closed except for special days but the facilies are open to the public everyday from sunrise to eleven pm  The tower is open on the first Sundays in June, July, August, September, and October. Due to the high desire to see for miles at the top of the lighthouse, reservations are required. Light House Tours run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and there is a ten dollar per person admission.

You will be able to learn about the history of this light house when you visit.  It was built in 1880 and is the oldest and tallest Light House in existance on Lake Michigan.  Although it began with Kerosene-fired lenses it was electrified in 1924 and then modernized in 1964.  Since the lighthouse soars 110 feet to its focal plane the light is visible for a distance of nineteen miles.  Just imagine the thousands of seaman who have been saved from disaster because of this Light House leading the way to safety.

The lighthouse was nominated to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.  The town of Wind Point was given ownership of the property by the National Park Service in 1997.  The Coast Guard still maintains the light as a public navigation aid.

Come and view this beautiful piece of history and possibly, take a trip to tour the other Lighthouses along the Lake.  It will make a fabulous Wisconsin vacation for you.
